Portugal Reaches Finals for First Time in 1984, Faces Tough Draw

Georgia caused the biggest upset of Euro 2024 so far with a sensational 2-0 win over Portugal to book its place in the round of 16. The victory marks the first time Georgia has ever qualified for the knockout stages of a major tournament.

Portugal, one of the favorites entering the tournament, reached the finals for the first time in 1984 and have been regulars at the final tournament since. The team features a number of star players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Felix, and Ruben Dias.

Despite their status as favorites, Portugal struggled to create chances against a well-organized Georgia defense. The Georgians took the lead in the 25th minute through a header from Giorgi Chakvetadze. They doubled their advantage in the 55th minute through a stunning strike from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Portugal pressed for a goal in the second half, but they were unable to break down the Georgia defense. The Georgians held on for a famous victory, sending Portugal home in a major shock.

Georgia will now face Switzerland in the round of 16. Portugal will face the winner of the match between Germany and England.

The Euro 2024 tournament continues on June 11 with a match between Italy and Turkey.
